University of Stuttgart, Institute of Automotive Engineering (IFS)
The Institute of Automotive Engineer Stuttgart, IFS, is part of the Faculty of Design, Production and Automotive Engineering at the University of Stuttgart and is engaged in research and teaching in the field of automotive and powertrain engineering. In cooperation with the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart, FKFS, basic university research is combined with applied contract research. IFS conducts a number of research projects, publicly funded, or run in cooperation with companies and associations. The institute was founded in 1930 and today houses thee chairs with about 80 employees.
In addition, IFS runs an undergraduate program in Vehicle and Engine Technology (FMT). In the bachelor’s program, students are initially offered basic knowledge in the natural sciences and engineering as well as initial vehicles technology fundamentals. In the master’s program, students can then choose to specialize in up to two of the four vehicle topics offered by the departments. Topics such as alternative fuels, aerodynamics and acoustics are covered. Electrification of the vehicle and the function of control units and software are also part of the courses. (The automation and networking of vehicles has already been covered in FMT lectures for several years. Due to its increased importance, the master’s program FMT has dedicated a new specialization subject to this topic since the winter semester 2017/2019. Under the leadership of the IFS and the Institute for Automation Technology and Software Systems, IAS, a cross-faculty lecture program was developed for this purpose.)
Furthermore, IFS is home to the Racing Team and the Greenteam with the Team Driverless of the University of Stuttgart,, which participate very successfully in the international student Formula Students competition. For this purpose, new competition vehicles are developed, designed, built and finally driven in competitions every year according to adapted regulation.
